MYSTICISM IN ART - “GEMATRIA”
May 26th, 2005 – June 14th, 2005 Opening “MYSTICISM IN ART” series, Grant Gallery and Pegasus Foundation are pleased to present the exhibition “Gematria”, featuring seven artists from around the world. Various forms of mysticism have been practiced across all cultures for thousands of years. Mystical ideas, beliefs and statements are often expressed though the medium of art. Even if subconsciously, every artist acts as a mystic, who brings these ideas to life, being emotionally connected with both the inner self and the outer universe. One of the forms of mysticism – Gematria – is an ancient system by which hidden truths and meanings are discovered within words. Each letter of an alphabet corresponds to a number. Numerical values of words are totaled up and these words are said to correspond with other words sharing the same numerical values. With its roots in Greek, Roman and Hebrew cultures, today this philosophy serves as a unifying concept for an international team of contemporary artists; Luca Lazar – paintings, Alex Cao – contemporary photography, Artem Mirolevich – paintings, Dimitri Sema – Paintings / art Installation, Carolina Sardi – sculpture/paintings, Vasily Kafanov – contemporary paintings, HR Giger - sculpture /paintings As diverse as the creators of the exhibited works, Gematria encompasses a number of art forms, including painting, photography, sculpture and video installation. It follows in the footsteps of the international art movement fusionism, which teaches the spectator to focus on the artist’s message behind their art while removing all barriers of various forms. Each observer’s unique interpretation plays a vital role in creating true art. Thus art is a catalyst through which energy and thoughts are transcended connecting the artist, the viewer, and the whole universe. This process resembles an act of deciphering a coded message using a gematriacal system, where the uncovered meaning is within the sphere of the one, who seeks it. |
